Before launching project activities, the six project partners conducted a comprehensive cross-national survey to better understand the motivations, challenges, and aspirations of adults 50+ across five partner countries — Slovakia, Czechia, Croatia, Finland, and Ireland. The findings were eye-opening and provided valuable insights into how older adults perceive entrepreneurship and lifelong learning opportunities:

  • Only 37% of respondents believed they have the necessary knowledge for starting their business
  • Yet an inspiring 77% said they would start a business if they had the right tools!

These results clearly show both the potential and the unmet needs of the 50+ age group when it comes to entrepreneurship. Many participants expressed strong motivation and curiosity but also pointed to barriers such as limited access to knowledge, digital skills, and tailored learning resources.

Novelties from our ongoing project activities

Building on these findings, the CHANCE consortium is now implementing Work Package 2 activities. The main results of this work package will be the creation of a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) designed specifically for adults aged 50+ who are interested in late entrepreneurship. The MOOC will be developed based on the results of desk research and a survey conducted by the project team, which will provide valuable insights into the needs, preferences, and challenges faced by the target group.

Partnership prepared a cross-national survey aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of target group’s learning needs and entrepreneurial readiness. The survey was distributed across five partner countries during the period of July – October 2025.

The survey explores a range of themes: employment status, digital confidence, interest in business creation, perceived challenges, and preferred learning formats. It also investigates how much time adults 50+ are willing to dedicate to online learning and what kind of support (mentoring, business planning, or digital training) would help them most.

The data collected through this detailed questionnaire will serve as a foundation for developing the project’s main result — a MOOC, that will be shaped following the survey insights. The MOOC will be free, flexible, and designed especially for adults aged 50+, helping them build entrepreneurial competences, enhance digital literacy, and gain practical insights into business creation.

This ongoing project research will ensure that the MOOC reflects the real needs, learning preferences, and entrepreneurial ambitions of our target group, ensuring a truly inclusive and impactful learning experience that reflects real voices from across Europe.

Together, we are creating new CHANCEs for lifelong learning and entrepreneurship across Europe.

A big thank-you goes to all our dedicated project partners!
